South of Clifden, the Wild Atlantic Way leads past the unique moorlands of Derrigimlagh. From today’s perspective, it is hard to imagine that about 100 years ago two of the trend-setting events of modernity took place here. In 1907, for example, the radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi opened a radio station in the middle of the moor via which news from London and Dublin were transmitted across the Atlantic, thus ushering in the age of global communication. Just a few years later, on 15 June 1919, the pilots John Alcock and Whitten Brown landed at Derrigimlagh and adventurously completed the very first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. A monument in the shape of an airplane’s nose reminds us of this milestone in the history of aviation.

Derrigimlagh is located in Connemara, about 6 km south of Clifden. A bog road leads from the R341 to the monument.
