Scattery Island is located at the mouth of the Shannon about 3 km from Kilrush. On the island there are many traces of an eventful past such as a settlement that was abandoned in 1978, a former barrack and early Christian buildings. Among them a remarkable round tower, which is considered to be the highest intact tower of its kind in Ireland. And yet it differs significantly from other round towers because its entrance is at ground level and not a few metres above it as is usually the case.
