The way to the Wild Atlantic Way discovery point “Kenmare River View” leads along Coulagh Bay to the Kilcatherine Peninsula. In this pristine landscape, right beside to the coastal road lies the Hag of Beara – a mysterious rock, appearing in numerous myths. According to legend, this rock is supposed to be the petrified head of a women, who waited here in vain, for her husband to return. Other stories say, the women lived seven lives, before she turned into stone.
No matter if you believe in the legends or not – even today, the old witch is honoured and given sacrifices at this very rock.
